Transitions

Wow, it has only been a little more than a week since I was elected to the position of section chair. I’m really thankful that I have the ability to stay up until 3AM at this point, since I usually get home from work and burn off the excess caffeine and energy from work on sending out emails and handling other APO business.

For as much as I’ve gotten done over these last ten days, I feel like I have that much more to do. It’s been an interesting challenge taking the leadership of the section, as well as establishing the framework for section operations, while still maintaining the rest of my life, which includes helping to run a large multi-faceted gaming group, getting ready to move over the summer and adjust to life with my fiancée, as well as maintaining the friendships I have made throughout my travels.

One of the keys to a good start, though, is a good transition. When the President of the United States takes office, he has a large transition team that is designed to help make sure all aspects are fully transferred over, as well as help select the team that will help guide his policies for the next four years. When I became section chair, though, it became my responsibility to ensure that everything that Fuzzy had in the works was transferred over to me, recruit and build my staff, and start to work with the chapters.

As the year starts to come to an end, is your chapter ready for the transition? Has your chapter made sure that everything is up to date with the national office? (You might want to consult the APO impact guides at http://www.apo.org/show/National_Programs/Leadership/APO_IMPACT to make sure.) Has it made sure that all of the contacts and forms needed to continue its service program are documented? Do next year’s officers know about the policies and procedures of the school as to how to reserve spaces on campus, what meetings someone has to attend, and changed account signatories? Is everything is ready to go for September 2009, and a nice, easy, and successful fall rush?

My hope is for all chapters to have a smooth and easy transition. If you need any help or have any questions, please feel free to contact either your advisers or your section representative.
