There's a Spreee in my Section Chair Brothers, I had planned to make my first article as Chair a happy and upbeat one. Like so many things, however, that plan changed in a dramatic way on September 11. Instead of what I had planned to write, I'd like to take a moment to reflect... Not so much on the horrible events that occurred that day, but rather on how we as a Fraternity responded to them.
There's an old saying which tells us that no matter how stony the path, some forge ahead... and no matter how easy the going, others lag behind. I'll even bet that all of you have heard that saying before. Well, my Brothers, I don't believe I have ever seen a path quite as stony as the one laid out for us so far this semester.
When tragedy struck last month, the entire nation was affected. Here in Section 88, it hit particularly close to home. Many of our Brothers grew up in or around New York City. Some, tragically, lost friends, neighbors, or even relatives. To those Brothers, know that the Section 88, as well as the entire Fraternity, mourns with you. As many of you know, at least one of our alumni - Shawn Boman, a founder of the Alpha Delta Eta Chapter - was lost that day in the World Trade Center. We've included a special tribute to Shawn in this newsletter.
Throughout all of this, I have looked with pride to the response of our Chapters. Every one, without exception, has made an effort to help lead the recovery on your campuses and in your communities. Epsilon Zeta was hosting a blood drive as the events of September 11 unfolded, and ultimately collected a record number of donations. Alpha Beta Chi distributed ribbons as a memorial to the victims, while Alpha Gamma Delta is planting forget-me-nots for the same purpose.
You have run fund-raisers, blood drives, and memorials of all kinds. You have led vigils and prayer services, and have loaded supplies onto trucks. Although the response has been different on each campus, the value of your Service has been consistently remarkable. You have forged ahead, and done what was needed, as Alpha Phi Omega, and Section 88, have always done.
In Leadership, Friendship, and Service,
